About
Sushiela

Sushiela is an artist and writer who has lived and worked in Los Angeles since 1970. Born in India, she grew up immersed in fairy tales, folk traditions, and mythology — sources that continue to inform both the visual and narrative language of her work.

She began creating stories as a teenager, combining text and image in a practice that evolved into a lifelong engagement with illustrated storytelling.

In addition to Jamal and The Camel, she is the author and illustrator of The Ant & the Grasshopper: A Love Story (1989). In 2002, she was commissioned by Orchid Press to illustrate Sir Richard Francis Burton's previously unpublished translation of Pilpay's Fables, executed in the Kangra painting style.
